In July 2002, the German Parliament (Bundestag) voted to dismantle the Palace of the Republic. In 2006, work began on the environmentally-friendly removal of the building.
Over the last 15 years, the city of Berlin has developed five urban areas totalling a surface area of 950 hectares into new future-oriented urban quarters of quite different formative design: Biesdorf-Süd, Wasserstadt Berlin-Oberhavel, Johannisthal/Adlershof Rummelsburger Bucht, and Alter Schlachthof.

The capital region has become a first rate location. Its excellent transport connections and central position provide a gateway to the new markets in the East. The new airport Berlin Brandenburg International will reinforce its role as a hub of international air traffic.
