Map 06.07 as of 2015
06.07 Urban Structure

Explanations and Imprint of the Map
  1. Information on the actual land use and the urban structure is managed and processed in the Urban and Environmental Information System (Informationssystem Stadt und Umwelt, ISU). A digital basic topographic map, the block map ISU5/50 at scales of 1:5,000 and 1:50,000, serves as a spatial reference system. It includes the statistical blocks, which are generally delimited by streets, together with their block numbers. The numbering and delimitation of the blocks are administered by the Statistical Office for Berlin-Brandenburg in the Spatial Reference System (Räumliches Bezugssystem, RBS). The block segments constitute the smallest reference area in the ISU5/50 and are delimited within a statistical block according to differing land use. Further criteria for the formation of segments were the soil associations and the silvicultural units. In general, the minimum size for the block segments is 1 ha. Linear area structures are captured if their width is at least twenty metres. A total of 25,352 blocks and block segments result in this way as of December 31, 2015. 13,253 of these areas correspond to the statistical blocks of the RBS; 3,137 blocks of the RBS, mainly large and vacant blocks, have been subdivided into 12,099 block segments.
  2. For the map "Urban Structure", which is intended as an overview, the 52 detailed area types present in the ISU were aggregated into 16 different urban structure types. The distinction was made based on the criteria of building and free-space structure, building age and use. The area types were retrospectively assigned to the block and block segment areas designated in the framework of the use mapping system; i.e. areas were not subdivided due to different area types. The area types are displayed in the map "Urban Structure - Area Types Differentiated" (06.08).
  3. The area types of the residential areas and mixed areas with predominant residential use were delimited based on their typical building and free-space structure, which usually results from their time of construction (building age). The area types retail, service, commerce, industry, public use, traffic and special use were differentiated based on the different land use and have a varied but usually no typical spatial appearance. They correspond to the categories of use of the map "Actual Use of the Built-up Areas" (06.01). The area types of the green and open spaces correspond to the categories of use of the map "Inventory of Green and Open Spaces" (06.02).
  4. The blocks and block segments and the areas whose use changed between 2011 and 2015 were updated based on the data from 2010. Based on the specified data, 1,364 new areas were formed, the current use was redetermined for 1,944 areas, and for 1,106 the geometric delimitation was updated (as of December 31, 2015).
  5. Detailed information can be found in the accompanying texts of the map 06.07 (Edition 2016) published in the Environmental Atlas on the Internet (http://www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/umwelt/umweltatlas/eie607.htm) and in the documentation on the methodology and contents of the Use and Urban Structure Mapping System 2015 (Methodik und Inhalte der Nutzungs- und Stadtstrukturkartierung 2015, German only).

2. In the framework of the ISU's use mapping system, information on a total of 52 area types was collected. It serves mainly to further differentiate the structural uses - particularly the residential use. The distinction was therefore made based on corresponding criteria of building and free-space structure, building age and use. By contrast, for the other area types the time of construction and the building structure are of secondary importance. They have no characteristic spatial appearance and only possess a typical use characteristic. The area types were retrospectively assigned to the block and block segment areas designated in the framework of the use mapping system; i.e. areas were not subdivided due to different area types. In order to simplify the representation, the area types were combined into 16 urban structure types in the map "Urban Structure" (06.07).
