Results of the Enquiry: Application demands of the EIS and GIS

In the following overview, the application demands of the EIS and GIS to the thematic main points will be briefly summarised. A detailed tabular representation of the fundamental principles and results can be found in the appendix.

Athens Application Demands
Air Trends and results from statistical analyses for CO, NO and NO2 contamination.
  Propagation computation and simulation models for 2D- (contamination region) and 3D-representations (ozone and photo oxidation).
Climate Point maps for all important climatic parameters over many years (since 1858), daily and hourly values.
  Climatic contour maps for temperature and rainfall.
Land Use Land usage on building levels in nine categories (1994 enquiry) of the GIS (scale 1:2000).
  Conducting and extrapolating targets of building heights and construction characteristics for every building as well as monument protection and renovation requirements (scale 1:1000).
  Conducting and extrapolating plans for protected areas and areas worth protecting, road systems and general land usage plans.
Soil Geological and hydrogeological parameters for the Attica region (scale 1:50000).
Traffic Traffic emissions (NO, NO2, O3 and SO2).
Water For the Attica region: data for groundwater (occurrences, depth etc.) and for surface area water (scale 1:50000).
  Flood risk maps from calculated fundamental principles.

Berlin Application Demands
Air Emissions of SO2, NOx, dust and CO2 in the form of point and grid maps calculated on the basis of air system results and interpolation.
  Pollution for different parameters in the form of grid maps and calculated on the basis of bio-indicators and interpolation.
Climate Temperature: near-surface wind speed; climatic zones; climatic functions; day and night near-surface temperatures.
Land Use Land usage; green and open spaces; development of open space; city structure.
  Maintenance of green and open spaces: population density.
Soil Topographical land maps; elevation maps; land profiles; sealing; valuable areas; development of open spaces; lead and cadmium in the soil; areas of suspected dangerous waste; presence of heavy metals in the soil.
  Soil communities; soil classification.
Traffic Traffic density; traffic noise.
  Traffic noise in green and open spaces; emissions from traffic.
Water Quality of surface water areas; quality of near-surface water; fish fauna.

Milan Application Demands
Air Traffic emissions; thermal power stations; agriculture; grid maps of biogenic emissions in different grid magnitudes.
  Interpolated maps of pollution from CO, O3, PTS, NO, NO2, NOx and SO2 from the basis of point acceptor measurements; grid maps of pollution acceptors from stationary sources on the basis of propagation computation.
Climate Climate maps and trend analyses for temperature, wind direction and wind speed, air pressure, humidity, acid rain.
  3D representations for wind fields from the basis of model calculations.

Rome Application Demands
Air Map of the results of pollution measurements for CO, NO, NO2 and SO2.
  Benzene pollution from stationary sources.
Land Use Ground coverage based on "Landsat TM", topographical maps, digital land models and aerial photographs.
  Maps of the distribution of plants, insects and birds.
  Vegetation maps.
Water Groundwater depth; direction of groundwater flow; cover of groundwater; wells and groundwater extraction.
  Quality of groundwater (coliform bacteria).
