04.09.1 Bioclimate in the Daytime
04.09.2 Bioclimate at Night
- This depiction and evaluation of thermic and bioclimatic conditions follows Guideline VDI 3787, Blatt 2. This work supplements other descriptions of urban climatic and air quality conditions (cf. other maps for Climate and Air). A particular problem are summer high-pressure weather conditions that contribute to heat periods. Individual inhabitants have very little influence on these heat "jams". Various land use structures can be balancing as well as additionally burdening for the thermal situation.
- The map gives the spatial distributions of heat loading intensities, expressed in PMV values. PMV mean Predicted Mean Vote. The basis for evaluations is the urban climate model UBIKLIM (Urbanes Klimamodell). UBIKLIM is an expert system developed by the German Weather Service (DWD Deutscher Wetterdienst). UBIKLIM simulates meteorlogical fields relevant for human heat balance in reference to land use; these fields are then modified by physical, statistical, and empirical parameters. Critical factors include topography, settlement density, and interactions between neighboring structures.
The meteorlogical fields produced are evaluated from a bioclimatic perspective by application of the "Michael Climate Model" (Klima-Michel-Modell). This procedure is based on the VDI guideline definition of an average person. It includes binding frameworks for clothing, weight, height, and the activity "relaxed walking". The definition of "average person" implies that evaluations depicted in the map could have more extreme consequences for sensitive persons, and for heavy physical activity.
- The portrayal is valid for summer days with maximum air temperatures of 25 °C. In the longterm mean, these values are reached on 35 days at the Dahlem reference station (on 61 days in 1997); and in the city center on up to 45 days.
- Grid size is 25 m x 25 m.
- A goal of UBIKLIM is to show differences between individual urban structures, but not to show every detail of different land uses. This is why the portrayal of the street network was reduced to selected primary connection segments such as the Stadtring (city expressway), AVUS, and Bundesstraßen (federal highways). Other streets, particularly the secondary road network, were allocated to the "built-up area" category.
