1. The map shows the dwell time of the seepage water in the non-saturated zone. The dwell time corresponds to the time which the seepage water in the non-saturated zone requires to travel from the surface to the groundwater table under the force of gravity. This dwell time is a measure of groundwater pollution sensitivity as well as for the characterization of the groundwater overburden.
   
   
2. The dwell time was calculated from new groundwater formation and the capillary capacity of the non-saturated zone (groundwater overburden). The capillary capacities were calculated from the sum of the capillary capacities of the soil - derived from the map of the soil associations - and the capillary capacities of the subterranean geological strata; the latter were obtained from the stratification of the bores in the geological archives.
   
   
3. The sealing was taken into account in the ascertainment of new groundwater formation. It should therefore be noted that the values shown represent mean conditions covering both sealed and unsealed parts of the individual sections. The dwell times will also change in case of de-sealed or further sealing.
