Explanations and Imprint of the Map
  1. The map depicts, at the level of surface type, the percentage of near ground wind speed as a ratio of the relatively unaffected reference station Tempelhof Airport. Above all, the map provides information as to the changes in the ventilation conditions of the respective area. However, it must be noted that in particular cases greater deviations from the conditions depicted here can be found. This is because the proportion of vegetation, the shape, size, and other aspects of the area may vary.
  2. The results of near ground wind speed measurements depicted here reflect an average from 29 daytime and 70 nocturnal measuring trips over the years 1980 to 1984 in the area of West Berlin as well as 21 daytime and 42 nocturnal measuring trips in 1991, predominantly in East Berlin. Altogether 770 measuring points were visited. In addition, further data sources were used for particular uses (forests, closed-courtyard construction, bodies of water).
  3. All near ground wind measurements from the measuring trips were taken at an elevation of 2.7 meters. Since the values taken from the station Tempelhof Airport were registered at 10 meters, these values were adjusted to reflect a measurement elevation of 2.7 meters.
  4. The urban structure types from the Berlin Environmental Information System (UIS, as of June 1994) were used to allocate the daytime and nighttime values measured.
