Explanations and Imprint of the Map
  1. The measuring sites are assumed to be representative of the depicted water section.
  2. Quality sections without color have no available measurements.
  3. Width of strips indicate the differing outflow amounts of waters.

02.01.1 Quality of Surface Waters 1991 (Environmental Atlas Standard)

Strip 1: orthophosphoric-phosphorus
Strip 2: ammonium-nitrogen
Strip 3: oxygen saturation index
Strip 4: no parameters
Strip 5: oxygen minimum
Strip 6: Titer for Escherichia coli (E. coli)
Outflow conditions: Outflow for the summer half-year 1991 (SMQ) at Sophienwerder station 15,17 m³/s
Median values of the summer half-year (SMQ) from the years 1971-1990 at Sophienwerder station 29,70 m³/s
  1. Evaluated in the given summer half-year were the test results from 90 of the approximately 170 existing measuring sites. Median values are given for phosphates, ammonia, and the oxygen saturation index. The worst individual values of the summer half-year are given for oxygen minimum and Titer for E. coli.
  2. Water samples were taken:
    • in West Berlin usually 12 times a year (monthly random samples)
    • in East Berlin and the surroundings of Berlin usually 24 times a year (every 14 days)

0.5 m below water surface. The evaluation undertaken here is thus based on 6 or 12 single values per section, measured in the summer half-year of 1 May to 31 October.

02.01.2 Chlorophyll-a in Surface Waters 1991

Strip 1: maximum of the summer half-year
Strip 2: mean value of the summer half-year
Strip 3: minimum of the summer half-year
Strip 4: mean value from April to June
Strip 5: mean value from July to September
Strip 6: transparence (mean value of the summer half-year)
  1. Test results from 57 of the approximately 170 existing measuring stations are evaluated in the given summer half-year.
  2. The samples were taken:
    • in West Berlin usually 12 times a year (monthly random samples)
    • in East Berlin usually 24 times a year (every 14 days)

0.5 m below water surface. This evaluation is thus based on 6 or 12 single values per section, measured in the summer half-year of 1 April to 31 September

02.01.3 Pesticides and PCB in Sediments and in Eels 1989-1992

Strip 1: total DDT in sediments
Strip 2: Lindane in sediments
Strip 3: total PCB in sediments
Strip 4: no parameters
Strip 5: total DDT in eels
Strip 6: total PCB in eels
  1. Test results from 461 sediment samples from 1989, 1990, and 1991 were evaluated. The number of samples per depicted water segment varied between 3 and 21. Altogether 578 eel samples were taken in the years 1989, 1990, 1991, and 1992. The number of samples per depicted water segment varied between 3 and 69. The average individual value for each water segment is depicted.
  2. The sampling was taken using a mudclaw to a sediment depth between 0 and approx. 20 cm.

02.01.4 Heavy Metals in Sediments 1991

Strip 1: Copper
Strip 2: Zinc
Strip 3: Lead
Strip 4: Cadmium
Strip 5: Nickel
Strip 6: Chromium
  1. The test results of 85 sediment samples were evaluated.
  2. 37 samples from the Dahme and Spree rivers were taken by mudclaw at a sediment depth of 0 to about 40 cm. 48 samples from the Havel river and the Teltow canal were taken by the frozen-core bore method. The accumulation depth of 0 to about 235 cm was evaluated.
  3. The number of samples taken per depicted water section varies between 1 and 10. The determined single values of each water section is depicted. Mean values were weighted for samples taken by the frozen-core bore method based on the accumulation depth.
