The city of Berlin possesses an overall stock of roughly 425,000 street trees.
Although the number has risen steadily over the last few decades, the city’s
current budget situation means that only limited funds are available for tree
replacement. As a result, not every tree removed for reasons of age or disease
can be immediately replaced.
The sponsoring of tree-planting activities has therefore been a welcome development
in recent years, with donations reaching a peak after the July 2002 storm that
destroyed around 7,000 city trees. The organization BUND Berlin e.V., for instance,
undertook fund-raising efforts to replace as many of the lost trees as possible.
Its “Trees for Berlin” campaign under the patronage of Berlin's Governing
Mayor Klaus Wowereit has recruited many donors. For more information about this
campaign, including the bank account number to be used for donations, see the
BUND website (in German).
Tree planting is carried out in coordination with the borough parks departments.
To donate trees, please contact the borough
parks departments (in German) directly
or the Senate
Department for Urban Development.
