Long-term Monitoring of Forest Ecosystems Including the Forest Intensive Monitoring Level II
Based upon the results of the 1989 interdisciplinary research project » forest ecosystem close to conurbations (Ball WÖs) « in Berlin (West), continuous ecological observation at forest sites throughout Berlin and hinterland has been conducted since 1990. The investigations are intended to document and evaluate the condition and pollution-caused changes in the functional processes within the natural balance of the pine forests which are typical for the greater Berlin area. The surveys were performed at regional sites for purposes of comparison. In addition, 3 predominantly pine forests were chosen for a comprehensive focused investigation (see overview). These forests also comprise part of the EU Intensive Monitoring of Forest Ecosystems (Level II plots).
Additionally there are 12 continuous observation plots to achieve area related statements covering the whole Berlin region.
