Berlin has ambitious goals for environmental protection. Thanks to the Senate's goal-oriented energy and climate protection policies, Berlin should be climate-neutral by 2050. However, environmental protection is an extensive theme which requires the efforts of many. The Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment is in charge of protecting Berlin's nature, plants, waters, soil and air. Problems concerning green spaces and natural areas, climate protection and energy management are solved in our offices. Subordinate agencies such as the forestry agency Berliner Forsten and the Fishing Agency look after the green cultural areas of the city. Waste and contaminated site management and atomic energy control, too, are responsibilities of the Urban Development Department. Shaping environmental policy is an important building block in ensuring that Berlin remains a place worth living for generations to come.
