What space typologies of the "outer city" are of interest to the IBA?

Large housing estates on the periphery ... for example, Gropiusstadt

The principle of modernity consisted in separating functions. The monofunctional large housing estates of the post-war period, typically controlled by a small number of major property owners, bear witness to this attitude. All across Europe, these estates have become home to an enormous part of the urban population. Particularly when viewed from the outside, they are, however, perceived as an "outer city". IBA Berlin 2020 wants to provide answers to the variety of issues and challenges of such "bedroom cities", utilising for this purpose their equally diverse wealth in potential.
