Project descriptionThe Kaufhof Department Store AG had taken over the former "Centrum Warenhaus" at Alexanderplatz after the reunification and after they had finished a first renewal opened a branch of Galeria Kaufhof with 20,000 sq.m. sales area on the spot. Based on the binding land-use plan I-B4a implemented in 2000 remodeling and extension of the existing department store startet in 2004. After only two years the renovated building with its 25 m extension towards the square, and a total remodeling of the interior could be opened to the public with a sales area increased to 35,000 sq.m. The remodeling had taken place while business was going on.
The former façade of 13,000 sq.m. with its surrounding honeycomb like structure of sculpted sheets of tin was replaced by a clearly articulated façade made up of natural stone and large glass and window areas thus providing a grand view on to Alexanderplatz from within and back again.
By the new layout plan a centrally located main entrance was made possible, 23 m wide and oriented towards Alexanderplatz. Such dimensions have not yet been paralleled so far in any other branch store of the Galeria Kaufhof chain. The entrance forms part of a two storey glass façade – the grand portal of Galeria Kaufhof.
