Planning steps for the urban reorganisation of Alexanderplatz
The plans for the urban reorganisation of Alexanderplatz started shortly after the reunification. On September 15,1993, the jury of the International Competition for Urban Design Ideas - Alexanderplatz awarded the scheme of the architects Kollhoff/Timmermann the first prize and provided the basis for the future development.
The radical intervention in the existing urban structures and the complexity of the projected reorganisation required the overall consideration of public and private interests. 1994, the Senate of Berlin, therefore, decided the accomplishment of binding land-use plans to enable an intense participation of the citizens in the decision making process.
In April 2000, the binding land-use plan I-B4a to embrace the main planning-area Alexanderplatz and its near surroundings was concluded. Hence, the legal basis for the commencement of seven of a total of ten high-rise buildings plus diverse further building projects was confirmed.
The adjustment of streets and supply lines at Alexanderplatz due to the altered needs warrants large capital investments that cannot be borne solely by the City of Berlin. Thus in 1999 urban development contracts were signed between the Federal State of Berlin and private land holders / investors in order to ensure finance plans and the realisation of public measurements.
