The Prussian Council of State met in the south-west wing of the palace from 1817 to 1848. Freiherr vom Stein had forced through the dissolution of the Royal Cabinet in 1808, thereby formally ending the period of absolutism in Berlin. Schlossplatz lay in front of the southern facade and was dominated by the Neptune Fountain. It was bounded in the south by the Marstall building housing the Royal Stables, which was built in 1901.
