The 220-metre long building "Haus der Elektroindustrie" was designed by the architects, Mehlan, Leibold and Skujin, and erected between 1967 and 1969 for use by the GDR's electrical industry. It was built in part using slab blocks and partly brick by brick, the steel frame construction being filled in with brick masonry.
The building was completely refurbished inside between 1991 and 1997. The façade was redesigned in 2000/2001 by the Russian architect, Sergey Choban, who has applied block-letter quotations from Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz to the panels.
The ministry moved into its headquarters at Alexanderplatz in 1999 already. Today a move to properties in Stresemannstaße is under consideration. The ministry could inhabit its new domicile located on the gap site between the Bundesrat and the new development on Leipziger Platz in the coming years.
