From Adenauerplatz to Wittenbergplatz
Kudamm Corner
A monolithic curved building was erected between 1999 and 2001 at the corner of Joachimstaler Straße on Kurfürstendamm: the new Kudamm Corner. It emerges from a pedestal that follows the course of the road. Plans were supplied by the Hamburg architects gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.
The façade is set in red and violet bricks fronted by vertical aluminium bars. The lower storeys are used by the C&A clothing store, the upper ones by a hotel, which guests enter via a three-level cube shaped atrium.
Forty-five meters high, it replaced a narrow antiquated arcade building from 1972 designed by Werner Düttmann. As a reminder of this older structure, a media wall was again included in the façade, which is now crowned by a sculpture ensemble entitled "Paris' verdict" created by artist Markus Lüpertz.
Right behind Kudamm Corner the hotel Concorde was erected according to plans by architect Jan Kleihues. It replaces the earlier C&A store from the 1960s.
