Building Bridges

Hochstraßenbrücke

In conjunction with the building work by Deutsche Bahn AG (German Rail) on the northern Berlin inner ring between the stations Gesundbrunnen and Wedding, the demolition and reconstruction of the Hochstraßenbrücke was necessary.

The old bridge consisted of two single bay load bearing frames, each with a span of 8 m. The northern bay, dating back to 1891, spans the suburban railway tracks of the northern ring, the southern bay from 1900 the railway freight tracks.

In order to electrify the railway line, it was necessary to raise the lower bridge edge and lower the rails in the area of the long distance rail tracks because of the overhead electricity lines. Moreover, the southern bridge bay had to be widened as two additional tracks were planned.

The superstructure was constructed in so-called WIB style. The existing spread northern abutment was partly demolished, reinforced and given a new bearing. The middle pillar was designed as a wall disk with two escape recesses and to take the impact loads of the railways. Elastomer bearings were used for the bearings.

During the construction of the new bridge, the sewage pressure conduit which had previously been a separate structure was placed on cantilever arms on the abutments and the pillar disk.
