A water basin beside the Müggelspree in the district of Köpenick was linked by canal with the Müggelspree for use as a harbour.
There is a public walkway on the banks parallel to the Müggelspree. In order to maintain this as a pathway, it was necessary to construct a pedestrian bridge over the connecting canal.
Because of the planned passage height for boats of 4 m, a moving bridge was constructed (scale beam bascule bridge).
The bridge mainly consists of a welded steel construction. The superstructure has a wooden cover. The drawbridge is raised by two racks which are worked electrically by rack threads.
An electrical power unit in a fenced off area on the south-western side is operated by boatsmen only.
