The new, larger Pankow District was created in 2001 by the Berlin administrative reform, and is made up of the formerly independent districts of Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg, and Weissensee.
With 347.700 residents, Pankow is now the largest of Berlin's districts; in terms of area it is the second largest.
The BLM presentations are chosen from two sub-districts:
- Prenzlauer Berg, one of the favourite areas of Berlin for young people. Formerly a working-class area, with densely built tenement quarters, it has a vibrant night life and a lively artistic avant-garde;
- Pankow, originally a green, suburban district adjacent to the inner-city, offers many interesting locations in Alt-Pankow, Niederschönhausen and Wilhelmsruh, particularly for families with children looking for quiet, high-quality residential opportunities
