The "Museumsinsel" (Museum Island) complex, designated a World Heritage Site in 1999, includes both the "Alte" (Old) and "Neue" (New) Museums, the Pergamon Museum, the Bode Museum as well as the "Alte Nationalgalerie" (Old National Gallery). The island, in combination with the museums in Dahlem and at the "Kulturforum" (Cultural Forum) as well as in the area around "Schloss Charlottenburg" (Charlottenburg Castle), forms the core of the new strategic concept of the Staatlichen Museen Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz (National Museums of Berlin - Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). Since the fall of the Wall, the collections previously divided due to the Second World War have been reunited and the complex restored. The "Deutsche Historische Museum" (German Historical Museum) has even been given a new annex.
