In contrast to Potsdamer Platz, which is actually a road crossing, Leipziger Platz - with its octagonal form - is a "classical" public plaza. In 1823 Schinkel built two customs offices at the Akzisemauer ("duties wall") which functioned as gate houses separating Leipziger Platz from Potsdamer Platz. During the Second World War the buildings were heavily damaged and, in the course of the division of Berlin, completely cleared away – as were the department store warehouses of the Wertheim Group.
Up until December 2000 the popular Infobox stood at Leipziger Platz; the famous red pavilion housed a continuous exhibition documenting the construction progress at Potsdamer Platz. Now, however, the historical octagonal layout and perimeter development are to be recreated. With the development of Leipziger Platz, the axle between City West, Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstrasse will be complete.
