The Moscow Region

Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation, a center of science, culture and industry. It covers an area of 1,000 km² and it has about 9 million inhabitants.

Moscow City is situated on the watershed of the Volga and Oka rivers ( the main river of city is the Moskva, a tributary of the Oka) and is located in the point of junction of three physical and geographical provinces: the Smolensko-Moskovskaya moraine height, the Moskvoretsko-Okskaya moraine-erosion plain and the Mesherskaya outwash plain lowness, characterised by soddy podzolic, formed on moraine and sandy loams.

The Moscow aglomeration is located within the belt of temperate continental climate with the following average annual parametrs: temperature - 3-3.5, precipitations - about 650 mm, annual amplitude of temperatures - 28, number of days with the average daily temperature above 0 is 210-214, duration of the period without frosts - 120-135 days. Most of precipitations take place in the spring-summer period.

Moscow and it`s suburban zone ( within a radius of 60-70 km from the boarders) constitutes the Moscow aglomeration which is the largest industrial center of Russia.

Today more than 340,000 enterprises are located in Moscow.

Moscow is the largest urban area in Russia and it constantly requires the conditioning of the perspective development. In order to meet this requirement it has been developed the Complex of the perspective development of the town with the basic purposes occupying the following subjects:

Executive power in 10 administrative boroughs of the city is performed by the Prefect offices, which provide practical realization of the purpose-oriented programs of social and economic development of borouhgs including ecological assessment of the territory.

The envolved administration Moskompriroda

The Moscow Committe for Environment and Natural Resourses Protection (Moskompriroda) carries out environmental control of all Moscow pollution sources. Moskompriroda subdivisions are located in every Prefect office.

Since 1997 the Moscow Government structure has been added by the post of the Minister of environment and natural resources protection and the main objects of activity are the coordination of all ecological organizations and environmental management.

The Institute of the Master plan of Moscow, Moscow Comittee of Urban Planning are responsible for planning, analyses and support of ecological programmes and initiatives (both on regional and local level).
